Veterans &
First Responder Programs

Major’s Place is a specialized initiative designed to support the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of those who have served our country and communities. Recognizing the unique challenges that veterans and first responders face—such as stress, trauma, and the difficulties of reintegration—this program provides a sanctuary where participants can find solace, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose through the powerful bond with horses.

Many veterans and first responders carry the weight of traumatic experiences, whether from combat, emergencies, or daily exposure to high-stress situations. Horses, with their innate ability to sense and respond to human emotions, offer a non-judgmental presence that can help participants process and heal from their trauma.

Through guided equine-assisted activities, individuals can explore and express their emotions in a safe and supportive environment.

 Program Objectives

Reducing Stress and Anxiety: The calming presence of horses and the serene natural environment of Major’s Place provide an ideal setting for stress relief. Participants engage in activities that promote mindfulness, such as grooming, leading, and simply being in the presence of horses. These interactions help lower anxiety levels, reduce hypervigilance, and promote a sense of peace and relaxation.

Building Trust and Relationships: Trust is a cornerstone of the human-horse relationship. For veterans and first responders who may struggle with trust issues due to past experiences, working with horses offers an opportunity to rebuild trust—both in themselves and in others. Horses respond to genuine intentions and consistent behavior, allowing participants to experience the rewards of trust-building in a tangible way.

Enhancing Emotional Regulation: The Veterans and First Responders Program emphasizes the importance of emotional regulation, a skill that is crucial for managing the intense emotions that can arise from past experiences. Horses provide immediate feedback to participants’ emotional states, helping them become more aware of their feelings and learn strategies to manage them effectively. This increased emotional awareness can lead to better coping mechanisms in everyday life.

Promoting Physical Health: Physical activity is an integral part of the program, whether through riding, leading, or caring for the horses. These activities help improve physical fitness, coordination, and mobility, which are especially important for those recovering from injuries or dealing with chronic pain. The physical benefits of working with horses also contribute to overall well-being, complementing the emotional and mental health gains.

Fostering a Sense of Community and Purpose: Veterans and first responders often miss the camaraderie and sense of purpose they had while serving. Major’s Place offers a community of support where participants can connect with others who understand their experiences. By working together in equine-assisted activities, participants can regain a sense of purpose, contribute to a collective goal, and rebuild a sense of belonging.

Program Structure
  • Individual Sessions: One-on-one sessions are tailored to the specific needs of each participant, allowing for personalized support and focused attention. These sessions provide a private and safe space to explore personal challenges and work towards healing and growth.

  • Group Sessions: Group sessions bring together veterans and first responders to participate in equine-assisted activities as a team. These sessions foster peer support, encourage collaboration, and help participants rebuild the sense of camaraderie that is often missed after leaving service. Group activities may include trust exercises, leadership challenges, and team-building tasks, all facilitated by experienced professionals.

  • Workshops and Retreats: Major’s Place offers specialized workshops and retreats for veterans and first responders, focusing on themes such as stress management, trauma recovery, and personal development. These immersive experiences combine equine-assisted therapy with other therapeutic modalities, such as mindfulness practices, art therapy, and nature-based healing activities, providing a holistic approach to recovery.

The Veterans and First Responders Program is open to all current and former military personnel, as well as first responders—including police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics. The program is designed to support those dealing with PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief, and other challenges related to their service. It is also beneficial for individuals seeking to reconnect with themselves, build resilience, and find a renewed sense of purpose.

Participants in the Veterans and First Responders Program often experience significant improvements in their emotional well-being, stress levels, and overall quality of life. Through their interactions with horses, they develop healthier ways to process emotions, build stronger relationships, and regain a sense of peace and purpose. The program also provides a pathway to reintegration, helping veterans and first responders transition more smoothly into civilian life or back into their roles with a renewed sense of strength and resilience.

At Major’s Place, we honor the sacrifices and service of our veterans and first responders by offering a space where they can heal, grow, and find support among a community that truly understands. Through the transformative power of equine-assisted therapy, we are committed to helping these brave individuals reclaim their well-being and continue their journey with renewed hope and strength.
